Alma, a 15 year-old-girl is being consumed by her out-of-control hormones, in which she fantasizes about sex constantly. Most of her sexual energy is concentrated towards Artur, the boy at school which she is crushing on. Living in a small town, Alma hates where she lives, looking for more out of her day-to-day life. At a party, Alma has an awkward sexual encounter with Artur, but when she tells her friends about the incident, she becomes ostracized at school, especially after Artur denies the encounter completely. Turn Me On Dammit is a Norwegian comedy-drama that pulls no punches when exploring adolescent female sexuality. Alma's sexual urges are illustrated both vividly, yet in a realistic light. We see how this young girl has sweet romantic fantasies as well as more dirty in nature fantasies which essentially encompass whoever she last laid her eyes on. It's very much Alma's story with the film routinely messing with the viewer-showing us glimpses of her fantasies sometimes blurring the lines between her fantasies and reality. It should be made clear that this is all done is a very tasteful, genuine way, never feeling exploitative in the slightest. In a way Turn Me On, Dammit, is the ultimate coming of age story in that it captures both the sexual awakening phase, as well as the mindset which teenagers seem to have. We see the finality of how teenagers view their world- how this alienation and loneliness makes Alma feel like she will be alone for the rest of her life, never finding anyone to be intimate with. We see how this sexual drive makes Alma question what is wrong with her, blaming herself for her outcast status. The tone of the film is part quirky, comedic, yet quite serious with great realism, capturing the angst and confusion which exist for people at this age. 8.25/10
