Two scientific explorers discover clues to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a space expedition to the far reaches of our galaxy in hopes of learning of the true nature of humanity. Prometheus isn't simple a horror film or an action film like the previous Alien films, but rather a film that aspires to be much more, somewhat in the same vein as a 2001 or Scott's own 'Blade Runner'. I would not deny that the film does leave something to be desired, but it's not as vague or full of plot holes as many people out there would have you believe. It's ambitious, and while it's not perfect, it is definitely the best type of science fiction in that it shoots for the stars. The first thing that jumps out about this film is how visually stunning it is. The production designers and visual effects artists deserve a ton of credit for creating one of the most visually stunning, inventive sci-fi film to come out of Hollywood in a long time. The cast is universally great, but Michael Fassbender, as the android David, and Idris Elba as Janek really stole the film for me. While Janek doesn't have much screen time, he really injects the film with more humanity and soul than any other character in the film. Honestly, I don't feel like Ridley Scott's direction deserves much credit at all, as he has clearly digressed from the fantastic, atmospheric direction in Alien to this film, where it's much of the simple point and shoot variety. The critiques of this film making no sense is so foolish to me, considering what it's about. The thematic elements are ballsy, interesting and ambitious and there is definitely a clear connection to the Alien mythology. I definitely could nitpick a few sequences in the film that I found unnecessary or poorly executed, but this is a film that's whole is far better than the sum of it's parts. This film is by no means perfect, but the people who think it makes no sense just don't like ambiguous films that raise ballsy questions about our existence without trying to give any clear answers, which in reality, would be foolish to even attempt to do in the first place. 7.75/10
