The ABC's of Death is a midnight movie compilation which consists of 26 different filmmakers short films. The directors range from such genre filmmakers as Simon Rumley, Ben Wheatley, Ti West, Yoshihiro Nishimura, Xavier Gens, and Nacho Vigalondo among others. As the opening credits of ABCs of Death explains, each director was given a letter and told to make a short film, given no limitations as to what type of film they chose to make. Like any type of compilation, ABCs of Death's quality various from short to short, but what surprised me the most is how consistently strong the shorts typically were. Given the name you would expect all the shorts to be of the horror variety but there was a surprising amount of genre variety throughout the 26 shorts. A bunch of the segments had a surprising amount of playfulness and humor which really helped the film be more enjoyable and fun. The obvious recent comparison of ABCs of Death is V/H/S and while they are quite different, I highly preferred the execution and variety in ABCs of Death. There are shorts that are existential, experimental, highly stylized, and batshit insane. This is definitely a film to be seen as a midnight movie because of the variety with sketches ranging from perverse to gruesome to hysterical. If you are wondering my favorite segments of ABC's of Death include: Apocalypse, Dogpound, Libido, Orgasm, Pressure, Toilet, Unearthed, Young Buck and Zetsumetsu. 7.5/10
